The Carbon Manual Remixes Clockwise – Brendon Moeller, Lola Dutronic (Richard Citroen), Zuul Music – Mantra – Mania – Mu Artist: The Carbon Manual Title: The truth is Label: Red Star Digital “ I was listening to Carbon Manual yesterday and…it’s actually pretty brilliant .” – Marty Thau, Chairman, Red Star Records New UK-based electro-psychedelic The Carbon Manual generates a sound that pierces the soul and psyche. Formed after a chance meeting between Iain Weir and Clifford Gee , and ex-Barracudas Jeremy Gluck , the trio agreed a casual intention to create just one song together. Due to the immediate, innovative nature of the work produced, more material emerged. “ The truth is ”, their debut EP for Red Star Digital is the outcome. Combining intense spoken word with organic rock mantra into bleak tension and luxurious, hypnotic passages of melody and voice, The Carbon Manual draw on the Beat tradition of Burroughs, Ginsberg and Kerouac, adding a sensibility informed by Krautrock and artists such as Suicide, Slint and Leonard Cohen. Ex- Barracudas ’ Jeremy Gluck, whose career with the band created a legend – in the UK indie leader Cherry Red Records has just reissued no less than six albums by the band in deluxe form – that has since spawned critically-acclaimed solo work with the late Nikki Sudden amongst others (their recordings also currently the subject of a deluxe reissue), joined in the Manual by core duo Weir and Gee, accomplished journeymen of the UK garage-psych’ scene, makes for a timeless 21st century barrage of hypnotic music and unpredictable beats that liberate hearers from expectations and cynicism. “ The truth is ” EP comprises three TCM songs and their remixes, the latter featuring the renowned Brendon Moeller, Lola Dutronic’s Grammy-nominated Richard Citroen, and rising UK DJ “Zuul”. In the recent past Jeremy Gluck has had remixes done by, amongst others, Mick Harvey and Echologist, the natural successor to which these new Carbon Manual mu -tations are in content and style. Parallel to their Red Star debut, “The truth is”, The Carbon Manual will release an eponymous deluxe limited edition LP on famed underground imprint Equation Records. This will the coffee table Carbon Manual, as snotty as it is lush. The Carbon Manual’s ambient rock’n’roll , and spellbinding speech sets a new direction for post-punk and alternative music. Blank verse regeneration or honky rap, the feel is fresh. “ Carbon Manual for me is an artistic and enlightened psychedelic adventure…this music will be viewed as refreshingly advanced and surprisingly accessible for those able to appreciate it .” – Marty Thau, Chairman, Red Star Records Ice Sleep I Break Through Empty Recorded and Produced in Axbridge, Somerset by The Carbon Manual 2009 Ice Sleep (Brendon Moeller Dub Mix) I Break Through (Lola Dutronic Mix) Empty (Zuul Discoid Mix) Iain Weir – Guitars and Machines Clifford Gee – Bass Guitar Jeremy Gluck – Voice Mu- sic by Iain Weir and Clifford Gee Words by Jeremy Gluck

The “Whisper” EP artists: CW from bottom – Brendon Moeller, Lola Dutronic, Dub Gabriel, Jeremy Gluck, Kate McEwan “The Whisper Story: 2000 and Fifties” ” The gently attractive “Whisper” would have made a very pretty song were Rev to give it lyrics.” – Trouser Press In a unique connect across two generations of artists and song, several genres and real inspiration, legendary Red Star Records founder “Chairman” Marty Thau breaks cover this year to launch Red Star Digital with a remix project bringing together the talents of many in the service of just one song: “Whisper”. It’s a tribute to a track – snapshots from a number of dizzying angles defying description but demanding attention – written by Suicide’s Martin Rev and Thau and included on Rev’s instrumental CLOUDS OF GLORY LP in 1980, which the latter also co-produced. The two having hooked up randomly on Facebook, Initially the idea was just to do a “Whisper” single produced by Thau and featuring ex-Barracudas’ Jeremy Gluck, but the project expanded. Different versions from different producers – each paying homage to the song in their own inimitable style but using Jeremy’s vocals however they wished plus all-new backing tracks in their style of choice – has resulted in mixes by some stellar names, notably star DJ Brendon Moeller, whose new Steadfast label is shaking and stirring; revolutionary mixer Dub Gabriel, riding high with his new “Ciao” compilation and whose version is an ingenious tribute to Suicide and dramatic departure both; Grammy-nominated Lola Dutronic’s Serge Gainsbourg reinvention; and UK rising star Amurgit, who offers a robot reggae. With digital distribution from Redeye , interest is bound to be serious from across the underground rock’n’roll and club spectrum, the “Whisper” EP is going to make a lot of noise. “The Whisper Story (Remix)” In a random Facebook hook-up, about a year ago Thau came across Jeremy Gluck, former singer and songwriter of second generation garage punk heroes The Barracudas, whose solo work includes late-Eighties “ I Knew Buffalo Bill ”, a collaboration with Nikki Sudden and Rowland S Howard considered the first “alt.country” work, and a body of underground electronica leaked out on download sites. A hardcore Suicide fan, Gluck duly interviewed Marty for esteemed UK fanzine Bucketfull of Brains. It didn’t stop there, though. An inclination to collaboration was catalysed when Thau suggested Jeremy covering “Whisper”; Thau always believed “Whipser” might be something special with a lyric, so he wrote one but did nothing with it until he invited Gluck to do the vocal. Graudally “Whisper” was knocked into shape: Jeremy would send Marty draft vocals, the latter communicated instructions back by email and the odd call. A female part was nailed by Jeremy’s partner, Kate McEwan. The files were duly despatched to the States where Marty polished them, conjuring a Fifties romantic pop sensibility and late Sixties touches to create a timeless feel both intimate and chaste, defying the vogue for crude pop by replacing sex drive with a muted love cruise. Disarming and deceptively catchy, a rendezvous where the future precedes the past, “Whisper” is a hit worthy of an imaginary “Alphaville” chart

First of all, the Whisper EP is ready to talk. Months of patient (and, in my case, impatient) planning has brought us this far. Standby me. Other junk on the hoof includes: After like 5 years the release at last, on NDN Records, of the great lost Barracudas out-take, ” Nothing Ever Happens in the Suburbs, Baby “, written in 1978 when the band was forming but unrecorded until 2004 when NDN backed the last ‘cudas album. This will be a cool vinyl 7″ release and sure to please the faithful. Outstanding new remixes of Carbon Manual tracks by H.R. Toad, Richard Citroen, Zuul and others, some destined for the debut TCM EP on Red Star and some for an eventual remix EP on another label to be determined. Finishing ” Run Out of Myself “, the second of two songs written and recorded with Band of Outsiders’ Marc Jeffrey.
