Here’s my review of Abdication by Juliet Nicolson in today’s Independent. My comment about how Nicolson should have stuck to one of Elmore Leonard’s rules about writing, which is not to bother describing people’s physical appearances too much, has been trimmed out due to lack of space. Good novel, but the best things about it are the real history as opposed to the fictional romance- how could any fiction compete with the ghastliness of shallow, dilettantish, Nazi sympathising Edward and Wallis?
