Actual playlist sequence heard on “The Real Mary Peale Show” on WNKU (Northern Kentucky University NPR station) this afternoon, while I was tooling around Cincy on the first day of spring:

“I’m Waiting for the Man” — Velvet Underground
“Here Comes the Night” — David Bowie
“Trash” — New York Dolls
“My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down” — Ramones
“American Ruse” — MC5
“God Save the Queen” — Sex Pistols
“Teacher Teacher” — Rockpile

Nope — next to last. Shortly before I heard that fab song sequence, as I was driving through Newport, Kentucky, I realized that the bright blue Chevrolet HHR in front of me had a pink script decal on its back window, proclaiming “Don’t Stop Believin’”(!) And I thought, “Wow! Simon may be on to something with this populist-anthem business.” (True story.)
