Twenty-nine years ago today I awoke to the news that John Lennon had been murdered by a gun-toting lunatic in New York, and it still rankles.
Henry Kissinger, who I believe is still wanted for war crimes in parts of south east Asia, was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.
John, whose song ‘Give Peace A Chance’ has become the anthem of peace campaigners everywhere and will likely remain so until the end of time, and who with Yoko did more to promote peace than any man alive and continues to do so through the ongoing poularity of songs like ‘Happy Xmas (War is Over’), was to the best of my knowledge never considered for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Does anyone know whether it can be awarded posthumously? And if so might not a campaign for such an award on the 30th Anniversary of John Winston O’Boogie’s passing be a worthy cause for RBP’s contributors and readers to get behind?

The 60′s were particularly formative years for anyone born in the 50′s. Life was good for many of us. On the other hand we had social issues to reconcile. Racism, the Vietnam war, assassinations, Cassius Clay & the voices of rock n roll. I was age 5 when the war started and about 15 when it was finally over. None of this was lost on me and my friends even as we laughed and played our way through the years.
One voice put these confusing times into perspective: John Lennon.
Many songwriters have written of peace but no one had the enormous influence on an entire generation as John Lennon. He captured our attention as a Beatle and then used his influence to promote peace. He challenged us to think about it. He asked us to “Imagine” and to “Give Peace A Chance”. He proved his commitment countless times and never wavered from his message. It was clear and effective. Who else has done so much to promote peace and understanding? To change the way people think. He branded the message and made it easy for us all to carry on.
I would like to think my generation could have helped change the world on it’s own. However, I maintain that it was John Lennon that gave us the courage and clarity to live our lives, teach our children and always consider first, the promise of peace.
John Lennon for Nobel Peace Prize is a no brainer.
We missed the 30th. I think Obama got it. John got a crator on the moon. in the sea of tranquility.. which was also hit with a rocket from NASA on John’s birthday. Is it just me, or does this sound. . off / or.. just wrong- the same old same old…
anyways. I an thinking that the reason for John’s death is becoming finally clear- more and more each day. as we see the recent events, the movements of the weather, weather enhancing agents, and the national guards. I don’t even like saying any of the names of that which I refer to. it is the political climate of repression. it is the big, “as if:”.
the mouth was silenced. just a note to say, some pretty peculiar phenomena were experienced which would love to be discussed, in a quiet manner. but no clue as to how to approach the subject. picked you up off of the ‘U.S. vs. John Lennon” movie, and the emotional force drove me here.
