Roky and Planty!

Has anyone ever noticed the timbral similarity between the voices of Roky Erickson and Robert Plant? Not entirely surprising, given Plant’s love of garage-psych but seldom remarked upon nonetheless. Leads me to propose a list of “larynxes separated at birth”, e.g. Al Stewart and Neil Tennant, Howlin’ Wolf and Captain Beefheart (and Tom Waits)… oh well, just thought I’d mention it!

  1. I must add William Elliott Whitmore to the Beefheart, Waits and Wolf club!

  2. And I must listen to young W.E. Whitmore (who sounds more like a 19th century cricketer than a banjo-wielding Americana throwback)… am hearing good things.

  3. Reggie Youngblood of Black Kids sounds he’s got a few vocal cord genes in common with Robert Smith of The Cure.

  4. Here’s another one – or rather, a kind of lineage: Roger McGuinn to Elliott Smith via Alex Chilton and Green Gartside! I know it sounds weird, but listen to Elliott (e.g. ‘Going Nowhere’ on NEW MOON), suspend disbelief for a second, and it could be Green singing!
